Alexander Technique vs. Massage

Alexander Technique vs. Massage

Sounds of the rainforest permeate the lavender scented room. Lying between soft clean sheets, a warm heavy pillow rests on your abdomen. You close your eyes and breathe deeply while a skilled masseuse slowly and evenly kneads out unruly knots and rock hard tension. Your obligations and to-do lists melt away, and you are left with pure and decadent relaxation.

Yes. Please. ThankYouVeryMuch.

Most of you would probably agree a thorough deep tissue massage from time to time is a little slice of heaven. So why on earth would you spend your precious resources taking Alexander Technique lessons, when you could instead just keep getting massages?

Life's a Beach

Life's a Beach

Just before beginning my Alexander Technique teacher training, I recurrently imagined myself on a tropical beach trying to grab on to a fistful of dry powdery sand. If you’ve ever done this, you know that truly dry sand will just run out of your fist, as it did in my imagination. You may be able to retain a small amount, but the majority will escape through whatever openings your hand provides.

By the end of my Alexander Technique teacher training the image had evolved into scooping up a handful of sand and letting it sift through my fingers, appreciating its texture and warmth. I was also able to imagine more of the environment around me. Instead of focusing all of my attention on the fistful of sand, I could smell the sea breeze, see the clear blue water, and hear the comforting sound of the waves rolling on to shore.

Turtle Power

Turtle Power

When the turtle needs protection, its head and legs retract into its brilliantly designed shell until the threat has passed. Human beings behave similarly. In reaction to stressful, dangerous, startling, nerve wracking, or even just uncomfortable situations, we often pull our heads, arms, and legs into our torsos. We tense our necks and shoulders, grip our hips, stiffen our legs, and hold our breath.

Oscar Winner Touts Alexander Technique

Lupita Nyong'o, winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "12 Years A Slave," says the Alexander Technique has been instrumental to her as an actor. Read what she said here.

The technique is taught at the top acting conservatories around the world including Julliard, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. It gives actors the tools they need to improve breath support, physically, effortlessly, and authentically transform into different characters, reduce performance anxiety, and prevent pain from physically/mentally/emotionally demanding roles.

As a performer myself, I can honestly say the Alexander Technique was the most powerful part of my acting training at Boston University. So powerful, in fact, that I became a teacher of it so others could benefit from the work too!

Guided Lie Down in Washington Square Park, NYC

Guided Lie Down in Washington Square Park, NYC

The Alexander Technique teachers at Julliard call lie downs "self lessons" because they are by far the best way to supplement, maximize, and renew the benefits you get from your private lessons. I personally have to do my lie downs every day, or else I tend to get totally bound up with tension and anxiety.

But it always really helps to have an outside person/voice to guide you through.

So check out the preview tracks below, and then pop over to the Shop and download your digital copy for only $12!

P.S. I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments below!

Pioneering a New Frontier

Pioneering a New Frontier

Did you know that all students of the Alexander Technique are pioneers? The journey is just like the Oregon Trail video game, except the supplies you have to gather before your journey are already inside you, and instead of moving out West to strike it rich, you are moving into the rich land of a more upright, expanded, resilient you.

5 DAYS and 5 WAYS to APPLY the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE in YOUR DAILY LIFE - Friday

FRIDAY

PICKING UP AN OBJECT

Start by  releasing any extra tension in your neck, back, arms, and legs. Let your spine lengthen from your tailbone all the way to the top between your ears. Let your head balance easily on the top of your spine. Let your torso widen. And while keeping that length through your entire spine, lighten up to allow for spaciousness through your hips, knees, and ankles. Now let yourself bend at your joints. Move down in space to go to the object, but think up the whole while, so you’re not getting sucked down into yourself or the object. When you grasp the object, see how little work you can do in your biceps, forearms, wrists or fingers. To come back up, renew all of these directions again, and let your head move up in space while the rest of you goes along for the ride. Instead of “straightening” your legs to stand, allow your joints to unfold as you come up. As you do this allow the weight of the object to pass through your neck, back, and legs through to the ground, so instead of your biceps or back tightening to hold on, the ground helps you by bearing the weight.

_________________________________________________________________

** As you may have noticed, all of the applications in the last five days involve first releasing extra tension in the neck and back, so that the head can balance freely on top of the spine, and then thinking of lengthening and widening or overall expansion. These are the basic steps all Alexander Technique students and teachers do before and during any activity. It’s a way of addressing our overall coordination so that we can do any activity we want with the utmost poise, freedom, and efficiency.

It may seem like a lot at first, but just like anything else, the more you practice, the easier this process will become. Especially when you’re just beginning, it’s essential that you first have an Alexander Technique teacher guide you through these kinesthetic experiences to give you accurate feedback on how you’re doing. Then you can play and discover on your own too!

5 DAYS and 5 WAYS to APPLY the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE to YOUR DAILY LIFE - Thursday

THURSDAY

 STRESSFUL SITUATIONS

Whether you’re in a heated conversation with your boss or friend, dealing with a cranky toddler, trying to make a work deadline, or any other of the dozens of situations we get stressed about on a daily basis, remember what you learned in kindergarten: Stop and Count to 10 (or higher if you’re really amped up!) This gives you time to change your reaction. Let your vision widen so you’re letting in as much of the space around you as possible through your eyes. Remember the contact your feet are making with the ground, and notice where your muscles have ratcheted up with tension in response to the stressful trigger. Ask the muscles of your neck, shoulders, and back to turn down the volume. Allow yourself to breathe. Imagine lightening up through your neck, back, hips, knees, and ankle joints. Proceed with renewed calm : )

5 DAYS and 5 WAYS to APPLY the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE in YOUR DAILY LIFE - Wednesday

WEDNESDAY

 SPEAKING

In order to speak easily and well, our jaw, tongue, throat, diaphragm, and lungs must be free to operate without constriction or tightness. And since the jaw, throat and tongue are all part of the head and neck, and the diaphragm and lungs are in the torso, guess what has to be open and free for optimal functioning? You got it – your neck and your torso/back. Once you’ve let go of any extra tension in your neck and back, your head can balance freely on top of your spine. Let your jaw be unclenched and easy. Let your tongue be soft, especially at its root in the back of your mouth. Your throat is open and spacious. And your whole torso is widening, lengthening, and expanding 360 degrees, so that your lungs and diaphragm are unrestricted. This allows your breath to occur completely and organically. If your voice sounds clearer and fuller, and you can more easily project if you wish, keep up the good work.

5 DAYS and 5 WAYS to APPLY the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE in YOUR DAILY LIFE - Tuesday

TUESDAY

 STANDING IN LINE

Become aware of your body in space, and all of the space around you. Notice your feet on the ground. Let go of excess tension through your neck, back, arms, and legs, without sinking down into your pelvis or hips. Aim up through your back, and up the back of your neck, out the top of your head. Let your legs release away from your torso, and supported by the ground. You’re expanding and allowing for more spaciousness throughout your whole self. If your breathing opens up through this process, you’re on the right track!

5 DAYS and 5 WAYS to APPLY ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE in YOUR DAILY LIFE - Monday

MONDAY

 SITTING AT YOUR COMPUTER

Ask yourself to release any extra tension in your neck and back muscles without collapsing downward. Let your head be easy on top of your neck and spine. Lengthen through your whole spine—from all the way down between your hips, to up between your ears. Widen through your whole back and torso. With both feet flat on the floor, allow the chair to support you, so that your weight is evenly distributed on your two sitting bones. Adjust the height of the chair or desk so that your arms can bend at a 90 degree angle to use the keyboard. Instead of craning your head toward the screen, think of allowing the images on the screen to come to you.

LIGHTEN UP! IT’S THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Do you ever feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? I remember when I used to feel that way all the time. (This is the part where I acknowledge that I totally sound like a cheesy infomercial, but I’m so in love with the alexander technique, that I can’t help it!) Even though that’s just an expression, over time most of us develop habits of compressing, collapsing, and bearing down on our skeletal systems, putting tons of undue stress on our joints. In the long run, these habits can lead to health problems like shoulder tension, back pain, migraines, herniated discs, sciatica, and exhaustion, from exerting way more effort than necessary to do even the simplest of tasks like sitting, walking, or picking something up from the floor. In general we just feel heavy, down, and depleted. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

In your Alexander Technique lessons, your teacher helps you identify areas where you are diminishing the spaciousness through your joints. Then using highly skilled, gentle touch and verbal guidance, your teacher assists you in releasing that compression and collapse, to guide you into a more efficient organization of your musculature, so that you recover your full expanded self from your head to your feet. This release of tension, and new found space between your joints, often counters the sensations of feeling heavy and pulled down, leaving students feeling lighter, more buoyant, and more up!

And let’s not forget about the mind. Whether you’re thinking negative, heavy, dark thoughts, or trying as hard as you can to solve a problem with a furrowed brow, our thoughts have a major impact on how we feel. As an Alexander Technique student, you will be encouraged to quiet the hamster wheel of mental chatter, filled with regrets about the past, schemes for the future, and tons of “I should do this” or “I should do that.” Instead you will adopt an explorer’s attitude, boldly investigating new territory in how you organize yourself and move about your daily activities. Everything you encounter is simply new information for your journey. In Alexander Technique we work to become true non-judgmental observers of ourselves, without fear of doing something wrong, and without the pressure to make sure we get all the answers right. Your lessons become a time of play and discovery. And the more you practice this way of thinking, the more skilled you will become at it, and the more you will be able to explore, play, and discover in the rest of your life.

The best part is that your body and mind inform each other. One cannot change without affecting the other. So as you release unnecessary tension, and decompress through your joints, it will make it easier for you to lighten up in your mind. And as you learn to take on an explorer’s attitude, you begin to see everything with fresh eyes, accepting things as they really are. This is where true change begins, and your body will inevitably lighten up in response. So though the weight of the world isn’t literally on your shoulders, it may feel that way. But now you know you can do something about it. Schedule your lessons today, and Lighten Up – It’s The Alexander Technique way.
